Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – January 28, 2013
Thank you to the parents that have sent in glue sticks!  I really appreciate it!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on penguins this week. We will be reading many different books like Penguins, Penguins to the Rescue, Tacky the Penguin, There was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow, and many others!
·        We will be studying long a: ai and ay.
·        We will learn about drawing conclusions when reading.   

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about adjectives.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.
·        train, way, tail, play, day, may, rain, gray, mail, afraid, about, would

Math:
This week in math we are working on missing addends. Example: 2+_=6
*We are started our timed addition math facts.  Please make sure your child practices at home.  We are working on plus 3. 

Science:
·        Penguins
·        Groundhog day

Don’t forget Thursday is class picture day!  If you want to order a picture please send in the form and money by Thursday.  Thank you!
We are out of glue sticks!  If you could donate some more to the classroom I would appreciate it!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on hibernation and mittens this week. We will be reading many different books like Where Are My Animal Friends, Hibernation, The Mitten, The Hat, Mystery Mitten, and many others!
·        We will be studying comparative endings (er and est).
·        We will learn more about sequence. 
Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.
·        bigger, biggest, faster, fastest, slower, slowest, shorter, shortest, sadder, saddest, goodbye, before

Math:
This week in math we are working on adding three numbers in word problems.
*We are started our timed addition math facts test last week.  Please make sure your child practices at home.  We are working on plus 2.

Friday is the 100th day of school!  Please have your child bring in 100 small items (cereal, buttons, pennies, etc.) to count. Thank you!
We are out of glue sticks!  If you could donate some more to the classroom I would appreciate it!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on Winter and Snowmen this week. We will be reading many different books like It’s Winter, Winter is the Warmest Season, Snowmen at Night, Snowmen All Year, The Snow globe Family, The Biggest, Best Snowman, Snowflake Bentley, and many others!
·        We will be studying r-controlled sounds this week (er, ir, ur).
·        We will learn about drawing conclusions while reading.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.
·        her, first, bird, girl, burn, were, shirt, fur, hurt, sir, visit, done

Math:
This week in math we are working on number line estimation, before, after and between, ordering three numbers, and adding facts to 20.
*We are starting our timed addition math facts test this week.  Please make sure your child practices at home.  We are working on plus 1.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – January 8, 2013
I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas and Happy New Year!
Report cards are coming home today.  Please look over it and the insert of standards for the nine weeks.  If you have any questions please let me know.  Sign and return your child’s report card as soon as you can. 
We are out of glue sticks!  If you could donate some more to the classroom I would appreciate it!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on New Years and frogs this week. We will be reading many different books like Squirrels New Year’s Resolution, Frog and Toad Together, Why Frogs Are Wet, Tadpole to Frog, A Frog in a Bog, Frog and Toad are Friends, Finklehopper Frog, and many others!
·        We will be studying inflected endings –ed and –ing this week.
·        We will continue learning about the Plot in stories (beginning, middle and end).

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.
·        ask, asked, plan, planned, help, helped, jog, jogged, call, called, again, soon

Math:
This week in math we are working on 10 More and 10 Less, Making Numbers on a Hundred Chart and Ordering Numbers on a Hundred Chart.
Please make sure your child is still practicing writing and counting numbers to 120.

Science:
·        Frog life cycle, comparing frogs and toads
