Weekly Newsletter


Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – December 2, 2013

We are starting something new in spelling this week.  I am giving a pretest on Monday so you can see how well your child understands the phonics skill and words for the week.  If your child gets all the words correct I will send home an enrichment list for them. 

 

Please make sure your child is practicing their part in the Christmas program at home.  Our play is next week and they need the extra practice at home.  Thank you for your help!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are comparing gingerbread man stories this week.  We will be reading The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Friends and many others! 

·        We will studying the final ng and nk sound this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be learning about verbs.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on plot this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

This week in math we are working on related facts and fact families.

Our Thanksgiving feast in on Friday.  If you signed up to send in food or help I will send home a reminder later in the week.  Thanks for your help!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are studying Thanksgiving this week.  We will be reading The Great Turkey Race, Turk and Hunt, Turkey for Thanksgiving, Plump and Perky Turkey, The Best Thanksgiving Ever and many others! 

·        We will studying the sounds of y (e or i) this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will working on nouns in a sentence.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on compare and contrast this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

This week in math we are working on subtraction. We are subtraction 0,1, and 2 and using addition to help us subtract.

Thank you to all the parents that sent in pumpkins on Friday.  I appreciate your help and we had so much fun!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about bats and spiders this week. We will be reading Stellaluna, Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats, Fantastic Bats, Spiders, Trick or Treat Smell My Feet, Big Pumpkin and many others!

·        We will studying the long o sound this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will working on proper nouns.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on sequence and author’s purpose this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

We are learning about pumpkins this week!  On Friday, please send a small pumpkin with your child.  They have to be able to carry it.  We are going to do lots of fun measuring activities with our pumpkins.  Thank you!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about Fall and pumpkins this week. We will be reading Fresh Fall Leaves, Scarecrow Boy, Colorful Leaves, The Runaway Pumpkin, Perfect Pumpkins, Pumpkin Circle, From Seed to Pumpkin and many others!

·        We will studying the long i sound this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will working on nouns.

Thank you to all the parents who sent in items for our Grandparent’s Day celebration.  We had a great time and I appreciate all of your help!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will learning about animals and their habitats this week. We will be reading many different books Deep in the Jungle, How Leo Learned His Lesson, Animal Habitats, A House is a House for Me, and many others!

·        We will studying the inflected ending –s and –ing this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will work on word order in sentences.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on main idea this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

This week in math we are starting to work on simple addition by making numbers 6-9.  We will also start adding 0, 1, and 2.  Please continuing working on ordering numbers with your child at home and counting to 120.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – August 19, 2013

Please help your child study their spelling words this week.  We will have our first spelling test on Friday. 

Please check their planner and folder daily.  Homework assignments, when we have them, will be written in planner. 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will learning about pets and pet needs this week. We will be reading many different books like Cookie’s Week, Harry the Dirty Dog, My Five Senses, Sam, Come Back, Bad Kitty, Poor Puppy, Pete the Cat and many others!

·        We will working on the short a sound. 

Grammar:

·        We will be learning how to write and identify complete sentences.

Comprehension:

·        We will be learning how to identify the character in a story.

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – August 12, 2013

We are having a great start to the year!  If you have not sent in your child’s supply fee money or school paperwork please do so ASAP. 

Planners are coming home with your child today.  Please check them daily along with folders.  Your child will color their behavior color daily.  Please initial each day so I know you have seen it. 

Thank you for all of your help so far!  I know we are going to have a great year!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be having an author study this week on Kevin Henkes. We will be reading many different books like Chrysanthemum, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Lilly’s Big Day, and many others!

·        We will working on alphabet letters and sounds.

·        We will review color words.  

 

Grammar:

·        We will be playing lots of games and doing activities with our names.

 

Spelling:

·        Practice spelling color words at home. 

 

Math:

This week in math we are working on numbers and counting.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – April 15, 2013
TCAP is next week!  This is a week closer than we originally had thought.  Please change the dates on your calendar.  Reading groups end on Wednesday this week.  Your child will not bring home reading group books after that.  Thanks!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about Inventors this week. We will be reading many different books like Simple Machines, Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison, Ben Franklin, Ben Franklin and his First Kite, and many others!
·        We will be studying vowel sounds aw and au.
·        We will review Drawing Conclusions.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about using I and me.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about Plants this week. We will be reading many different books like A Tree is a Plant, Seed to Plant, Dot and Jabber and the Great Acorn Mystery, The Tiny Seed, From Seed to Plant and many others!
·        We will be studying vowels in book.
·        We will review Compare and Contrast.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about how sentences begin and end.

·        We will be learning about St. Patrick’s Day this week. We will be reading many different books like The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever, St. Patrick’s Day,  There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover, The Luckiest Leprechaun, and many others!
