Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – December 17, 2012
We will not have reading groups again until after Christmas Break. 
This week the first grade is studying Christmas around the world.  They will be visiting three countries each day.  They should have a lot of information to share with you each night! 
Don’t forget our Christmas party is on Wednesday morning.  Please send in your assigned item.  Thank you! Dismissal on Wednesday will be at 11:20.
Help! We are out of glue sticks!  If you could donate some more to the classroom I would appreciate it!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on Christmas again this week. We will be reading many different books like Santa’s Reindeer Games, Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear, Merry Christmas, Splat and many others!

Spelling:
No spelling words or test this week.

Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – December 10, 2012
We will not have reading groups again until after Christmas Break. 
This Friday is Polar Express Day in First grade.  Please have your child wear their favorite pajamas to school.  They can bring a small stuffed animal, blanket or pillow too.  They have to be able to fit everything in their backpack. Thank you!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on Christmas this week. We will be reading many different books like The Night Before Christmas, Hurry Santa!, I’ve Seen Santa, Santa’s Stuck, Olive, the Other Reindeer, Moosletoe, The Christmas Humbugs, The Polar Express and many others!
·        We will review Compare and Contrast, Sequencing and Fiction/Nonfiction.

Spelling:
No spelling words or test this week.

Math:
This week in math we are working on place value and greater than/less than.

Language Arts:
·        This week we will be reviewing nouns and verbs.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – December 3, 2012
Don’t forget your child needs to wear Christmas colors tomorrow to school.  We are performing our Christmas program during the day.  They need to be back at school Tuesday night at 6:30 pm wearing nice Christmas clothes.  The program starts at 7:00. 
If you have not turned in your child’s permission slip and donation for our field trip on Friday.  Please do so ASAP.  Thank you!
 
 Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on gingerbread this week. We will be reading many different books like The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Boy, The Gingerbread Girl Goes Animal Crackers, The Gingerbread Man Loose in the School and many others!
·        We will study words with the ending -es this week. 
·        We will learn about Theme. We will also review Compare and Contrast with our different books.

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday. No enrichment spelling this week!

Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – November 26, 2012
We are starting something new in spelling this week.  I am giving a pretest on Monday so you can see how well your child understands the phonics skill and words for the week.  If your child gets all the words correct I will send home an enrichment list for them. 
Please make sure your child is practicing their part in the Christmas program at home.  Our play is next week (December 4th) and they need the extra practice at home.  Thanks for your help!
 
 Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be doing an author study on Laura Numeroff this week. We will be reading many different books like If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, If you Give a Pig a Pancake, If you Give a Moose a Muffin, If You Give a Cat a Cupcake, If You Give a Dog a Donut and many others!
·        We will study digraphs of –ng and -nk this week. 
·        We will learn about Plot and Cause and Effect. We will also review Compare and Contrast with our different books.
Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.
Spelling Words:

This week in math we are working on subtraction to 20 and fact families.

Book Fair info

The book fair is at Yates  Nov. 12-16.  It will be open Monday - Thursday from 7:45 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. and Friday from 7:45 a.m. - noon.   Tuesday evening, Nov. 13  will be our Build-a-Book event.  Come create a memory with your child.  This event is FREE for Yates students thanks to the generosity of the PTO and Title 1 funds.  If you have other children who wish to make a book, they will need to purchase their book kits. Build-a-Book will be from 6-7:30 p.m. and the fair will be open as well.
 
Breakfast with the Grands will be Thursday and Friday.  We hope your child's grands (or other important adult in his/her life) will visit our school, find out what their grand student is learning and celebrate with us.  Adult breakfasts will be $2.00 each; student breakfasts are $1.25 unless your child participates in the free or reduced food plan.  Students from Ms. Fuller, Painter, and Rogers' classes and First Graders are invited for Thursday from 7:45 - 8:15 a.m., while Ms. Morris and Whitlock's classes and Second Graders are invited for Friday.

·        We will be learning about the traditions of Thanksgiving and turkeys this week. We will be reading many different books like Plump and Perky Turkey, The Littlest Pilgrim, The Great Turkey Race!, Thanksgiving Turkey, Turk and Hunt and many others!
·        We will study the sounds of y this week. 
·        We will learn about sequencing and compare and contrast.
Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.

Math:
This week in math we are working on subtraction to 20.
Please work with your child at home on their addition and subtraction math facts.

Yates is having a canned food drive this week for the Caring Place.  Please send in nonperishable canned foods to donate.  Thank you!

·        We will be learning about Elections and Thanksgiving this week. We will be reading many different books like Grace for President, Duck for President, The First Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving, Thankful World, Me and on the Map and many others!

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – October 23, 2012
We are going to end our pumpkin unit of study on Friday with pumpkin measuring.  Please have your child bring in one medium or small sized pumpkin by Friday.  They have to be able to carry their pumpkin to different stations so please don’t send one that is too heavy.  Thank you!
 
 Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about Pumpkins this week. We will be reading many different books like I Like Pumpkins, Pumpkin Hunt, The Runaway Pumpkin, Perfect Pumpkins, From Seed to Pumpkin, and many others!
·        We will study the long o sound this week.

Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – October 15, 2012
  Report cards come home on Tuesday.  Please look over them and sign.  They need to be returned to me as soon as possible.  If you have any questions please let me know. I cannot send home your child’s report until I have had a conference with you.  If you have missed your conference please get in touch with me to reschedule. 

 Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about Community Helpers and Fire Safety this week. We will be reading many different books like Officer Buckle and Gloria, Firefighters, Fire, Fire!, When I Grow Up, Daisy the Firecow, and many others!
·        This will also include our Reading Street basal reader.  Please be looking for it to come home with your child on Wednesday and read Who Works Here?
·        We will study the long i sound this week. 

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.

Math:
This week in math we are starting addition to 20.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – October 1, 2012
If you have not sent in your child’s permission slip for the Mayfield trip please do so ASAP.  Our trip is Friday! If we don’t have enough in donations to cover the trip we will not be able to go.  This is a fun trip and I really don’t want us to miss it!  If you can help as a chaperone I would love to have you!!
 
 Reading and Language Arts:
·        We will be learning about apples this week. We will be reading many different books on apples like Apples, Amazing Apples, Up, Up, Up! It’s Apple Picking Time, The Apple Pie Tree, Apples A to Z and many others!
·        This will also include our Reading Street basal reader.  Please be looking for it to come home with your child on Wednesday and read A Big Fish for Max.
·        We will study digraphs sh and th this week. 

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Thursday this week because of our field trip.
Spelling Words:

Math:
This week in math we are learning about solid shapes.  We will be able to name, describe and create them.

Don’t forget our animal habitat projects are due this week!  Please have them in by Wednesday.  Thank you!

We will not have reading groups the rest of this week due to a state pre-test being give Tuesday-Thursday and our field trip on Friday.  If you volunteer to help during reading groups you do not need to come this week. 
 
 Reading and Language Arts:
·        We will be doing an author study on Eric Carle this week. We will be reading Rooster’s Off to See the World, The Mixed Up Chameleon, A Grouchy Ladybug, Pancakes, Pancakes, The Foolish Tortoise and many others!
·        This will also include our Reading Street basal reader.  Please be looking for it to come home with your child on Wednesday and read Get the Egg!
·        We will study the short e sound this week. 

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.
Spelling Words:
·        bed, men, red, step, ten, net, leg, jet, sled, wet, saw, your
Math:
This week in math we are continuing to practice counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120 and read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
We will be counting by 10’s and learning about odd and even numbers
Please have your child work on counting 1-120. 

Language Arts:
This week we will continue studying sentences including:
·        Sentence structure and telling sentences.

Don’t forget our field trip to Lee University is on Friday, September 21!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Labor Day weekend and enjoyed the break!
This week we will be focusing on zoos.

Reading and Language Arts:
·        We will be reading My School’s A Zoo, Curious George, Birthday Zoo, How Leo Learned to Be King Good Night Gorilla, Deep in the Jungle, and many others!
·        We will studying the short vowel “o” this week
·        Reading Groups start Wednesday, September 5th.  Please look for a book to come home with your child every day except for Friday.  Please read the book with your child every night and return to school the next day.

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.
Spelling Words:
·        mom, hot, hop, pot, pop, ox, lock, mop, got, rock, help, use
Math:
This week in math we are continuing to practice counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120 and read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
We will also be comparing and ordering numbers.

Language Arts:
This week we will continue studying sentences including:
·        Naming and Action parts of sentences and sentence structure

Science:
We will be focusing on what living things need and zoo animals.

Don’t forget our Grandparent’s Day celebration is on Friday, 2:00-2:45!

This week we will be focusing on farms. We will have a first grade farm day on Friday, August 31st.  Please send your child dressed in farm attire for a fun filled farm day on Friday!

Reading and Language Arts:
·        We will be reading Click, Clack, Moo Cows That Type, Farmer Duck, The Big Red Barn, Rosie’s Walk, The Little Red Hen, Hattie and the Fox, The Three Little Pigs and many others!
·        This will also include our Reading Street basal reader.  Please be looking for it to come home with your child on Wednesday and read Pig in a Wig together.
·        We will studying the short vowel “i” this week

Spelling:
Please practice daily!  We will have spelling test on Friday.
Spelling Words:
·        in, did, sit, six, fix, lip, it, mix, pin, wig, take, and
Math:
This week in math we are continuing to practice counting to 120, starting at any number less than 120 and read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral.
We will also be organizing, representing and interpreting data.

This week we will continue studying sentences including:
·        Naming parts of sentences and sentence structure

Science:
We will be focusing on living and non living things as well as farm animals.

Our school fundraiser ends on Friday.  If you have any orders to turn in please send them to the school by Friday.
