Weekly Newsletter


Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – August 25, 2014

This week we will be focusing on farms.  We will have a first grade farm day on Friday, August 29th. Please send your child dressed in farm attire for a fun filled farm day on Friday!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about farms and farm animals this week.  We will be reading many different books like Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type, Milk Makers, Farmer Duck, Barn Dance, Rosie’s Walk, The Little Red Hen, The Three Little Pigs and many others!

·        We will be working on the short i sound.

Grammar:

·        We will continue to study sentences; including naming parts of sentences and sentence structure.

Spelling:

Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

·        in, did, sit, six, fix, lip, it, mix, pin, wig, play, jump

Math:

·        This week in math we are comparing numbers and putting numbers in order.  Please have your child practice counting at home.  We want to be able to count to 120 by the end of the year.

Science:

·        We will be focusing on living and nonliving things as well as farm animals.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – February 10, 2014

Don’t forget your child needs to bring their valentine’s box and cards for the class by or on Friday for our party.  Thank you!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are learning about Valentine’s Day this week.  We will be reading Valentine’s Day, Froggy’s First Kiss, Old Lady Who Swallowed a Rose, Happy Valentine’s Day Mouse, The Biggest Valentine Ever, Love, Splat and many others! 

·        We will work on long a: ai and ay.

 

Grammar:

·        We will work on Adjectives this week.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on drawing conclusions while reading.   

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Social Studies:        Valentine’s Day

 

Math:

This week in math we will be working on word problems involving addition, subtraction, and adding three numbers.  We will have our math facts test on Friday.  We are working on adding 3.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – December 2, 2013

We are starting something new in spelling this week.  I am giving a pretest on Monday so you can see how well your child understands the phonics skill and words for the week.  If your child gets all the words correct I will send home an enrichment list for them. 

 

Please make sure your child is practicing their part in the Christmas program at home.  Our play is next week and they need the extra practice at home.  Thank you for your help!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are comparing gingerbread man stories this week.  We will be reading The Gingerbread Man, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Girl, The Gingerbread Baby, Gingerbread Friends and many others! 

·        We will studying the final ng and nk sound this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be learning about verbs.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on plot this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Our Thanksgiving feast in on Friday.  If you signed up to send in food or help I will send home a reminder later in the week.  Thanks for your help!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We are studying Thanksgiving this week.  We will be reading The Great Turkey Race, Turk and Hunt, Turkey for Thanksgiving, Plump and Perky Turkey, The Best Thanksgiving Ever and many others! 

·        We will studying the sounds of y (e or i) this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will working on nouns in a sentence.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on compare and contrast this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

This week in math we are working on subtraction. We are subtraction 0,1, and 2 and using addition to help us subtract.

Thank you to all the parents that sent in pumpkins on Friday.  I appreciate your help and we had so much fun!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about bats and spiders this week. We will be reading Stellaluna, Zipping, Zapping, Zooming Bats, Fantastic Bats, Spiders, Trick or Treat Smell My Feet, Big Pumpkin and many others!

·        We will studying the long o sound this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will working on proper nouns.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on sequence and author’s purpose this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

We are learning about pumpkins this week!  On Friday, please send a small pumpkin with your child.  They have to be able to carry it.  We are going to do lots of fun measuring activities with our pumpkins.  Thank you!

 

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will be learning about Fall and pumpkins this week. We will be reading Fresh Fall Leaves, Scarecrow Boy, Colorful Leaves, The Runaway Pumpkin, Perfect Pumpkins, Pumpkin Circle, From Seed to Pumpkin and many others!

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – September 9, 2013

Thank you to all the parents who sent in items for our Grandparent’s Day celebration.  We had a great time and I appreciate all of your help!

Reading and Phonics:

·        We will learning about animals and their habitats this week. We will be reading many different books Deep in the Jungle, How Leo Learned His Lesson, Animal Habitats, A House is a House for Me, and many others!

·        We will studying the inflected ending –s and –ing this week.

 

Grammar:

·        We will be will work on word order in sentences.

 

Comprehension:

·        We will be working on main idea this week. 

 

Spelling:

Please practice daily!  We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:

This week in math we are starting to work on simple addition by making numbers 6-9.  We will also start adding 0, 1, and 2.  Please continuing working on ordering numbers with your child at home and counting to 120.
