Weekly Newsletter

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – March 18, 2013
Don’t forget our egg hunt is on Friday.  Your child needs a basket and to send in a dozen candy filled eggs.  No chocolate or nuts please.  Thank you! 
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about Spring and the Easter holiday this week. We will be reading many different books like Spring, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Chicks, Mole and the Baby Bird, Easter is, Easter Egg and many others!
·        We will be studying dipthong ou.
·        We will review Sequencing.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about Exclamations.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Math:
This week in math we are working on non standard measurement. *We have started our timed addition math facts.  Please make sure your child practices at home.  We are working on plus 8.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – March 11, 2013
Reading groups start back this week.  Please make sure your child reads their book every night.  Thank you!

Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be learning about St. Patrick’s Day this week. We will be reading many different books like The Luckiest St. Patrick’s Day Ever, St. Patrick’s Day,  There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Clover, The Luckiest Leprechaun, and many others!
·        We will be studying dipthong ow /ou/.
·        We will review Character, Setting and Plot.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about Commands.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.
·        how, town, down, now, brown, cow, clown, frown, crowd, growl, eyes, never

Math:
This week in math we are working on adding and subtracting two-digit numbers together. We will also review a lot of previous taught skills. *We have started our timed addition math facts.  Please make sure your child practices at home.  We are working on plus 7.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – March 4, 2013
Thank you for all of your help!  We won a class party for both box tops and raising money for ipads.  The class is very excited!!
Don’t forget Friday night we have our annual Hoedown at Yates! There will be a chili supper, silent auction and a book fair for your family to enjoy.  This event is from 5:30-8:00. 

Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be having a book study this week. We will be reading many different Henry and Mudge books like Henry and Mudge the First Book, Henry and Mudge and the Wild Goose Chase,  Henry and Mudge Starry Night, Henry and Mudge Mrs. Hopper’s House, Henry and Mudge Puddle Trouble, and many others!
·        We will be studying the suffixes –ly and -ful.
·        We will review Cause and Effect.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about adjectives that compare.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Mrs. Ginn’s First Grade Newsletter – February 25, 2013
This week we are celebrating Dr. Seuss and his wonderful books! Don’t forget about our fun dress up days and the character parade on Friday!

Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on Dr. Seuss books this week. We will be reading many different books like I’m Not Going to Get up Today, Green Eggs and Ham,  Cat in the Hat, Cat in the Hat Comes Back, Wacky Wednesday, Fox in Socks , and many others!
·        We will be studying compound words.
·        We will review Character, Setting and Plot.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about adjectives for how many.

Spelling:
Please practice daily! We will have a spelling test on Friday.

Author/musician Chris Rumble will help Yates celebrate Read Across America Week with a reading pep rally Tuesday, March 26 at 6:30 p.m. Come join in the fun and get revved up about reading. His books will be available for purchase at $6.60 each

Your child’s president report was due today.  They will be presenting their reports to the class this week so please send it in ASAP if you haven’t already.

Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on President’s Day this week. We will be studying the lives of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We will be reading many different books like Celebrating Presidents, Let’s Read About George Washington,  Let’s Read About Abraham Lincoln, and many others!
·        We will be studying long i: ie and igh.
·        We will review Realism and Fantasy.  

Grammar:
·        We will be learning about adjectives for what kind.

Don’t forget our Pennies for Pads!  Ipad Fundraiser that is going on now.  Please send in any loose change you can spare for the next two weeks.  Thank you!
Your child needs to send in their Valentine’s box and valentines by or on Thursday.  Don’t forget to send in your assigned item for the party!
Reading and Phonics:
·        We will be focusing on Valentine’s Day this week. We will be reading many different books like Valentine’s Day, The Biggest Valentine Ever,  The Old Lady who Swallowed a Rose, Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse, Love, Splat, Froggy’s First Kiss, Clifford’s Valentine and many others!
